Lost: 100th Episode, "The Variable"

Previously on Lost: 99 episodes of excitement, mystery, drama and brilliance. Also, Daniel Faraday returned to the Island in 1977. It's also important to remember that Faraday's mother is Mrs. Hawking, his research benefactor was Charles Widmore, his lab assistant Theresa was mysteriously injured and Desmond is his Constant.

Picking up where we left off with Desmond, Penny rushes him to the hospital where the doctors promise to take good care of him. In the waiting room, a familiar face shows up: Mrs. Hawking. She apologizes for the fact that her son was the one who led Desmond to this fate. More importantly, how did Mrs. Hawking get to the hospital so quickly?

30 Years Ago: Daniel Faraday gets off the submarine on the Island. He's back because he saw a photo of Jack, Kate and Hurley and is desperate to figure out how they got back. He rushes over to Jack's and wakes him up in the middle of the night, rambling like a mad man. It'a a miracle that he ever makes any friends with his insanitry.

Jack tells him about Faraday's mother, and Daniel clearly has some mommy issues because his response is that she was wrong and Jack wasn't supposed to come back.

Flashback: As a young boy, Faraday practices the piano while his overbearing mother pressures him to work harder and study more. She doesn't want him to waste time with leisure activities, telling him that he has a special destiny. He thinks he can have both a work life and a social life, claiming he can "make time." Mrs. Hawking knows better, or does she. I suspect if she really wanted, she could literally create time.

1977: Moving from one place to another like a mosquito, Faraday drives off to the Orchid to create the scene from the opening of this season with the tiny accident in the cave. This time, we see him confront Dr. Chang, insisting that everyone be evacuated from the Island because a similar accident will occur at the construction for the Swan Station in just six hours, only it will be much, much bigger.

Obviously Chang doesn't believe a word this mad man says, a fact that is furthered when Faraday claims he';s a time traveler and Miles is Chang's infant son. For an allegedly smart man, Dr. Chang is stupid enough to believe Miles, who denies all of Faraday's ranting.

Only three episodes remain as Lost's fifth season heads into the stretch, gaining speed on a collision course for what's sure to be a gobsmacking season finale May 13. When last we spent time on the island in "Some Like it Hoth" Daniel Faraday returned from Ann Arbor, where he had been working at a DHARMA research center.

Presumably Faraday has news from the mainland that will disrupt the dynamic of the story, but what news? Perhaps more importantly, what is The Incident and how is it responsible for the disaster at The Swan station? Who will end up together? Who will die? Is Desmond alright after being shot? How will Ben develop as a member of the Others? Who will end up pushing a button every 108 minutes for the next 540 days? Will the survivors continue to live in 1977 or will they travel again?

This week promises a mind numbing clip show but on April 29 Lost will return with "The Viariable," marking the 100th episode on the series history. According to the official press release, Jack and Kate find themselves at odds over the direction to take to save their fellow island survivors, Locke further solidifies his stance as leader of "The Others," and Sawyer and Juliet come under scrutiny from the Dharma Initiative.

The episode promises to be Daniel Faraday-centric, with Spencer Allyn playing a young Daniel Faraday. In a really striking coincidence (which surely isn't a coincidence at all) blond bombshell Alice Evans, who has made a career guest starring on series like Curb Your Enthusiasm and the Chris Isaac Show, will play a young Eloise Hawking. We may learn whether Eloise is in fact one in the same with Ellie.

With Locke continuing to rise in power as one of The Others it will be interesting to see what role he plays in shaping young Ben's development. John knows they'll share an intense rivalry later. But it's hard to imagine him doing anything to change the future. That just doesn't seem like his style.

Sonya Walger is scheduled to appear as Penny but whether Henry Ian Cusack will show as Desmond (and therefore confirm that he's alive) is far less clear.

And given Lost's obsession with numerology can we expect the number 100 to be prominently featured?

Lost airs Wednesday night at 9pm EST/8pm CST on ABC.

What improvements are you really going to make to Empire Strikes Back, Hurley? Empire might be the best genre movie of the past thirty years. It'd make more sense to give George Lucas some help on Return of the Jedi because, as you yourself stated, no one likes Ewoks. The actual reason Hurley was writing Empire, I imagine, is so the Lost writers could use that cutesy play on words in the episode title (“Some Like it Hoth”). Last night was your patented “Let's take a breather before the stretch run” episode. Lost needs these and, while right now some viewers might be a little disappointed, it makes watching the DVDs much more palatable. You can't be in fifth gear all the time. I also liked that they didn't beat around the bush – Miles was obviously Dr. Chang's son. No need to stretch that mystery out. Besides the very last scene, which brought an old friend back into the fold (finally!), “Some Like it Hoth” was a simple character study. And the Miles-Hurley Comedy Hour.
I was always a bit turned off by Miles' “power,” mostly because it came from nowhere, without much explanation. Even though last night was his episode, we still didn't get much explanation as to why Miles can hear the dead. We can chalk it up, I suppose, to a connection with the island. There were some nods to the fact that it might be hereditary, that Pierre Chang also has that ability. Still, why? Dr. Chang, one would assume, will be a major player over the final four hours of the season, so maybe we'll find out yet.

The soul of the episode was in the tenuous relationship between Miles and his father. There's something poetic about Miles' situation. Never getting to meet his father, finding out from his dying mother that he died, then receiving the opportunity to meet and get to know him, but being unable to reveal to Chang that he's actually his son. Hurley's reaction to Miles' confession took me by surprise, but it was perfect. Of course Hurley would try to force the issue.

Though we have to assume Miles will have a significant part to play over the rest of the season and perhaps the series, it's still bizarre to have a secondary character receive such a comprehensive episode in the lead-up to a season finale. Was there anything all that enlightening in Miles' back story to justify its placement here, near the end of the season? The meeting with Naomi, and the mention of the plane makes it clear that the Oceanic 815 wreckage was definitely faked by Widmore. But, what else was there? Miles is in it for the money? But, we knew that already.

I don't want to complain, though. The C-Story, with Roger Linus, Jack, Kate and Sawyer was a good set up for the action to come. In two weeks, when Lost returns, we'll be getting a Daniel Faraday episode, which I'm very much looking forward to. Until then, I find myself without much to think about as a Lost fan, which is actually kind of a nice feeling.

Previously on Lost: Juliet, Kate and Sawyer conspired to save Young Ben's life by taking him to the Hostiles while Miles and Hurley engaged in hilarious time travel speculation.

Tonight's episode of Lost pleases me not only because it's the first Miles-centric episode of the series, but because the title is a pun, and I love puns. It combines the brilliant Marilyn Monroe film with a Star Wars reference. Will Miles and Hurley dress up like women before taking shelter in the carcass of a tauntaun?
There’s no “previously on” package, we just go straight into an Asian woman renting an apartment with her cute little son. The woman looks an awful lot like Dr. Chang’s wife as seen in the opening scene from this season. And if you think I’m just being a racist and saying all Asian women look alike, she’s played by the same actress, so sorry to spoil the big reveal, but as you probably guessed a long time ago, Miles is totally Dr. Chang’s son.

She pays the landlord and tells him how her husband is out of the picture. Young Miles takes a tour of the dilapidated apartment complex. He hears something and walks into a room with a dead man. He screams until his mom shows up and Young Miles tells her the dead man is still talking to him. That one scene is infinitely better than the entire movie The Sixth Sense, but maybe I’m just saying that because I hate M. Night Shyamalan.

Back on the Island, Kate and Sawyer call up Miles and tell him to erase the tape of them taking Young Ben out to the Hostiles. He tries, but gets interrupted by Horace who has a super secret mission for Miles that’s part of his Circle of Trust. Lamest secret society name ever. Horace asks him to take a bag out to Radzinsky in a remote location that’s Hostile territory, literally.

Miles does and he learns the bag is actually a body bag for...well, a body. Radzinsky has two cronies drag out a dead body and tells Miles to take it back to Horace. He won’t tell Miles what happened to him, but that’s kind of a moot point since Miles can talk to dead people...

This episode will be centered on Miles, making this his first solo episode.

In this episode, Daniel Faraday finally returns after being MIA for several episodes. He's apparently alive in 1977 as one scene involves him alongside Jack and Kate. While he's been away, Faraday has been exploring the Island and the Others, though exactly what his intentions were is unclear.

Here's the official ABC description: "Suspicions about a possible breach intensify after Ben is taken from the infirmary, and a reluctant Miles is forced to work with Hurley when he's asked to deliver an important package to a top Dharma official."

The guest cast includes DHARMA residents Horace, Phil, Dr. Candle and Radzinsky. It also shows that Naomi will return and that there will be flashbacks to a young Miles with his mother.

The times they are a changing. As industry watchers are well aware the television networks have been deeply concerned for some time about the encroachment of newer media onto their turf. Every new cable or premium channel, video game console or website that draws attention and excitement potentially does so at their expense. Part of the solution they’ve gravitated towards is going digital themselves, making series available online through a variety of channels, some free and some pay. But two news bulletins released today about Lost illustrate the reasons it’s growing more complicated to assess or describe how well a series is doing.

The good news, according to World Screen, is that ABC’s online expansion has so far been a success. Last month nine out of the ten most commonly downloaded television series online were furnished by ABC.com. Dancing with the Stars was March’s top earner, garnering twice the numbers of any other series with three million unique viewers. But Lost finished second in the country with 1.4 million. That may not sound like a lot when compared with Nielson rating figures in the tens of millions, but it’s more than you think.

Lost was the country’s most digitally beloved program overall with 35.8 million downloads for the month of March. That’s more views than the series got on television (with the three new episodes combined for 29 million viewers.) So while less than a seventh as many people watched Lost online as watched the March 4 episode “LaFleur” on television those same people watched more often. Unless one believes that downloading TV off the Internet is going to become less common it’s reasonable to speculate that those numbers may grow increasingly on the downloads side.

Now the bad news. Lost’s television numbers are down overall and falling. Last season the series averaged 17.1 million viewers a week over the abbreviated 13 episode run. This season that number is down to 10.2 million viewers an episode. For the past four weeks in a row Lost has failed to hit 10 million. How scary is that for Lost’s producers? Not even one new episode of the series (not counting clip shows) had ever failed to hit ten million before.

Would it be sensationalistic to speculate that ABC’s own online coverage is drawing enough viewers away from their broadcast coverage to make an impact? Well, ‘impact’ is a relative term, but one could easily overestimate the direct connection between the stories in a search for literary symmetry. Even if all 1.4 million unique viewers watching Lost on ABC.com had, at some point, stopped watching the series on television to focus exclusively on the Internet their efforts combined would still only account for a fraction of the damage. Together they could not have put Lost over the ten million mark last week.

Given that World Screen’s numbers would suggest the average online viewer downloaded 25 Lost video clips and materials a piece it’s not unreasonable to think some of them may have been big enough fans to watch the broadcast also, meaning their online views should be counted as a benefit rather than part of the problem.

Lost likely didn’t benefit from going up against the NCAA Playoffs in the month of March, but that’s a poor excuse since the series faces the same problem every Spring. One unknown variable is the number of people who are downloading the series online from sources other than ABC.com - websites like YouTube and TV Links which offer bootlegged downloads. But there’s a more likely possibility.

Since the real leak seems to have sprung early on in season four, with ratings gradually decreasing throughout, viewers’ negative reaction to the writer’s strike and to the creative problems caused by many series’ botched seasons may still be having an impact on the series.

Unfortunately for the networks even if primetime series are being hurt by a public relations disaster that will eventually get smoothed over that’s still a long term problem, especially for Lost. Since the densely woven drama’s emphasis on subtle clues and the fans’ memory of past episodes the seven million or so viewers who dropped out since the beginning of last season may find the task of getting caught up to speed daunting enough they never get back on the broadcast schedule. If that’s the case then Lost’s planned end after next season may come at an appropriate time, and producers may have to hope that they continue to add viewers gradually though DVDs and, yes, Internet downloads.

Young Ethan
Putting together a timeline of events, Ben and Ethan hunted down Rousseau in early 1989, before the Purge. This means that, like Ben, Ethan defected from his DHARMA family before everyone was killed.

Clearly no one has been to Ben's house in a very long time, because the Risk board was still set up the exact same way it was when Keamy and his men attacked and killed Alex three years earlier.

Since Widmore was banished while the Others were living in the Barracks, this puts his exile some time after the Purge in December 1992.

I can’t shake the feeling that John Locke is different, and I keep asking myself why. Did he part his hair on the opposite side than usual? No, that can’t be it. New brand of soap, maybe? No, I‘m sure it‘s still the generic DHARMA brand. Not a lot of good buys on the sandpit. Did he switch to Burma Shave? Or start seeing a new Hostile? Did the Earth move for him last night?

Perhaps it did. Ever since John Locke came back from the dead he’s seemed more relaxed, confident and in control. John often seems to feel a responsibility to do things on his own like a father who‘s responsible for doing what‘s best for his family, even if they don‘t like it; and all the while he struggles to keep Benjamin Linus from getting in his way. He’s wryly funny but in a somewhat introverted way, guarded, serious. He’s rarely whimsical or easy going. Even in his most easy going moments he's the Bob Newhart of Lost.
The balance of power seemed to be shifting between John and Ben long before Smokey Alex scared Ben within an inch of his life and demanded he become Locke’s faithful servant. Ben is used to knowing more than other people, even if he doesn’t know everything he claims to. His confidence has always been based on a shaky premise. He’s like a man holding his fingers in his jacket like a gun. He feels coy because Locke and the others never know what he’s talking about, and can’t be sure whether he’s dangerous or just scared, useful or just bluffing.

I get the impression that since returning from the dead John Locke actually knows a lot of the answers that Ben only pretends to. Because he’s no longer threatened by Ben’s fake gun, the three Aces that might or might not be in Ben’s hand of cards, he doesn’t have to tiptoe blindly around his nemesis. He knows where to walk now.

I’ll pose the question to you, dear reader. Does John seem different to you? He told Sun that he was the same John Locke. But do you believe him? And is he now the secret keeper, or is there a different explanation? Is his soul still at peace, for example, or filled with some sort of Heavenly reassurance? Has he simply gotten closer to God?

Patsy Cline

Kate really loves Patsy Cline. In fact, we've seen her listening to her in at least one episode every season, always a Kate-centric episode. In "Tabula Rasa," "What Kate Did," "Left Behind," "Eggtown" and now this episode as she drove Aaron to see Cassidy, Patsy Cline is always on the radio.

She's Got You

The Patsy Cline song played in this episode was "She's Got You." This was also played on a DHARMA radio last season when Kate and Claire were living together.

Catch a Falling Star
Music also plays a big role in Claire and Aaron's lives. This lullaby that Kate sings to Aaron was also sung to a baby Claire by her own dad, Christian Shephard. When Claire was going to give her baby up for adoption, she asked the adoptive parents to sing this song to her baby.
